Polecats Perform “What Do I Get” @ VLV Car Show

// April 12th, 2012 // No Comments » // Events, Videos

If you know rockabilly, you probably know about The Polecats, a damned near legendary British rockabilly band that’s been doing it since, get this, 1977!

They were the final act at the recent Viva Las Vegas Car Show Stage last Saturday and it was cool to see some living legends do their thing live for a crowd that appreciated what they were witnessing.

First impression of these guys felt a little like channeling some old school Jerry Lee Lewis energy mixed with some punk.. maybe the Damned or Buzzcocks…. hmmm wonder where I got that Buzzcock reference? Oh well, in case you missed it here is a little video of them performing a little ditty called “What Do I Get?” by some other British band that escapes me.

And if you live in Los Angeles and are STILL jonesing fora little rockabilly, then you gotta check out White Boy James and the Blues Express this Saturday, April 14th @ the Torino Lounge in Paramount, CA. We’ll be there covering the event so if you go, please say “hi” and I’ll hit you up with a Dorados Rockabilly Trio CD… and might even buy you a beer.

Unless you are a scumbag promoter named “Black Cat Entertainment” that owes us and a bunch of other people money… of course. Then you can buy us one…FOR A CHANGE.

Youth Brigade in LA

// March 1st, 2012 // No Comments » // Events

Our good buddies Youth Brigade are coming to Los Angeles! Oh wait, they live here. OK, our good buddies, Youth Brigade are playing in LA! Ok, they are not our good buddies, we met the lead brother, Shawn Stern once in NYC but hey, he was cool and he seemed to like us. He really did.

OK enough namedropping. We know, we know, we sound like a Hollywood douchebag.. And why do I keep referring to myself in the plural “we”? I have no idea.

Anyway, we’ll be covering the show (in this case, I do mean we, it’s me and the Russian interns, Tim & Snik), so look for us if you go and if you don’t for some silly reason, like say, geography (living in South America or Russia is no excuse to miss this show dear reader), then look for photos and videos on Saturday.. or Sunday.. or Monday at the latest.

Here’s a little flipcam video from that show in NYC a few years back with Youth Brigade.. singing my all time YB favorite song  ”I Hate My Life”.. and you know what.. sometimes I do.

Goldenvoice 30th Year Anniversery Show Featuring Social Distortion

PICS FROM ADOLESCENTS, X & SOCIAL DISTORTION IN SANTA MONICA

Goldenvoice is one of the most prolific punk concert promoters of all time. Founded by Gary Tovar, you guessed it, 30 years ago, the legendary promoter was able to bring the different factions of Southern California’s burgeoning punk rock scene together, give it just enough structure and kick in the pants to take off and become something truly special in the world of music.

Gary Tovar - Founder of Goldenvoice

Now 30 years later, it’s hard to believe what a force West coast punk (my personal favorite and I’m not from here btw) has become in the rest of the world.  I mean if I listed all the influential west coast punk bands here, I’d still be listing the bands by the time you’d be reading it.

There are simply too many to count and whether you consider Offspring and Green Day to be true punk rockers any more, the reality is that bands like them along with NOFX, Pennywise, Rancid and….geez, there I go again listing the damn bands.. well let’s just say there are not only a bunch of Cali punk bands still playing to this day, but they are as influential as ever.

Well on this magical night, the 1st of the 3 day Goldenvoice 30th Anniversary shows, I was honored to be able to photograph the legendary promoter himself, Gary Tovar, as he introduced 3 legendary punk bands.

The night began with the Adolescents, who I assure you are no longer Adolescents at all, but that didn’t keep em from rocking the house. This Fullerton, CA band was formed in 1981 right around the hey day of West Coast punk. This was my first time seeing these guys live. I shot the first 3 songs in the photo pit and then headed dutifully back in the crowd to hear the rest of their set which was pretty tight.

Now I’ll admit, I only have a few tracks of Adolescents, “Kids of the Black Hole” and a couple more. But after seeing them live, well, they are one of those bands that will probably be top of mind when I get ready to refill the old ipod. The band members have played in other notable punk bands like “Agent Orange”, “Social Distortion” and more.

Next up was the legendary LA punk / folk band “X’, whom I’d seen in NYC about 2 years ago. Once again, I don’t have a ton of “X” material but what I do have I love. Lead singer, Exene Cervenka was once married to one of my all time favorite actors, Viggo Mortenson (see him in “Eastern Promises” if you haven’t already). Exene is also an accomplished artist, but she’s had some serious health issues of late. She announced a couple years ago that she is suffering from Muscular Sclerosis, a serious disorder with no known cure.

But on this night, Exene showed little signs of anything but energy and love for her craft as she and her talented band mates Billy Zoom and John Doe ripped through hits from their critically acclaimed albums they’ve been cranking out since they formed in 1977.

“X” is an LA band through and through but they’d look right at home in Austin, TX or Nasvhille, TN with their sometimes folksy look and sound which bounces between hard, fast paced punk and root tinged folk for a sound that can sound almost like Folk or hillbilly punk (at least to me, a guy from Tennessee).

The final act was what I and most of the crowd came to see, Social Distortion. Unlike the Adolescents and X, I’ve seen Social D. at least a dozen times and am more familiar with their music. Extremely familiar actually. I own every Social D. song ever released and have listened to a Social D. track at least once almost every single day of my life since I first discovered them in 1997.

But since I’d been traveling in Latin America for the past year or so, this was the first I’d seen SD in in a long time and the first getting a taste of their hometown crowd going nuts over Mike Ness and co. He is treated like a God in Southern California and I see now why they like to tour so much around home. They can sell out a venue several nights in a row no problem and no one seems to tire of seeing them.

As always, there were fans that looked like they were so young they were probably dropped off by mom or dad and fans who must be facing retirement soon. There were parents with their kids and there was an older guy wearing a Social D. jacket who could have easily been an accountant or a company CEO or gasp!!! a f”ing wall streeter or 1 per center.. rocking out on the front row.

Needless to say I was stoked (how is that for some so-cal vocabulary?) to be shooting my favorite band of all time up close and personal. My flash was malfunctioning but I still managed to get some decent pics as Ness and Co. came out and immediately kicked it old school with “Atom Bomb”.

They played a wide range of songs including “Moral Threat” which was my first time to see them play that particular diddy live as well as a couple off their recent release “Hard Times and Nursery Rhymes” including my favorite “Machine Gun Blues” and  “Gimme The Sweet and Lowdown” which Ness proclaimed his favorite to the partisan crowd.

After an intense set of rock n roll classics, the guys did one encore before the 11pm curfew hit (it’s LA yall!) which characteristically was the Johnny Cash cover and now Social D. classic “Ring of Fire” that you’ve heard all over NBC promoting the return of “Fear Factor”. Yep, Social D. should be rolling in the licensing $ this year, I’ve heard them all over TV lately.

Ah, but they are still firmly punk, doing it their way or the highway kind of stuff. The manager got all the photographers over for a little huddle pre-show and laid out the rules of the road (flash is ok, 3 songs only, after 3 songs put your camera away or you’ll be asked to leave, etc., etc,). I was cool with that. It’s their show, I’m just trying to get a pic.

Social D. did not disappoint and I was really honored to help GoldenVoice, a true legend in the promotion game and possibly the single most influential punk promoters of west coast punk of all time , celebrate their 30 years.

The next two nights featured even more bands like Bad Religion, Youth Brigade, Vandals, Dickies… oh man, there I go again, listing bands.

Well I’ll let Gary Tovar’s published statement sum it up:

“The artists and lineup for these special shows were chosen to reflect the bands that embraced and were instrumental in building Goldenvoice from day one. Like us, they had just the right screws loose. Because of their support past and present, Goldenvoice was able to flourish and become a part of the Southern California music scene. These bands took a chance on us 30 years ago and continue to be a big part of what we do today. We are excited for them to help us honor our first 30 years!”

You don’t know me, but thanks anyway Gary. It’s a cliche I know, but here is wishing you 30 more years. I might be in a walker or wheelchair but if I can, I’ll be there for that celebration too, just like some of the old cats that made it to this show.

It’s Psychobilly time again in LA with our good buddies Evil Devil hopping across the pond from Italy to deliver another kick ass concert for California’s contingent of psychobilly crazies, of which there are plenty. The concert is taking place on Saturday, December 10th at the Glasshouse in Pamono, CA and features locals like Rezurex, The Grims and Switchblade 77. It’s put on by Black Cat Entertainment and if you have a magnifying glass or can zoom your viewer in to the really, really tiny logos on the bottom of the flyer, you’ll see that Punk Outlaw is involved.

Don’t let the little logos on the flyer fool you, we’re going to have a big presence at the aforementioned event. We’ll be screening some videos for the crowd in between sets including music videos from our Punk Outlaw Records’ artist Los Suziox, Rudos Wild and more.

And we’ll have a booth there, with T-Shirts & CDs for sale, stickers for giveaway and more. PLUS we’re casting for a video vixens and maybe even a dude or two for our upcoming music video shoot for the kick as song “Betty Page” from our good buddies, Colombian rockabilly mainstays “Dorados Rockabilly Trio” due out in January.

So if you always dreamed of being in a rockabilly video (and lets face it, who hasn’t?), well now is your chance! So don’t let the little logos fool you, we’ll be at the event in a big way.. or so we hope. So look for us and the first 3 people that come up to me at the booth and say “hey man, I know you, your Punk Outlaw”, will get their paws on a Punk Outlaw Punkaholic Prize Package which includes a shirt, CD, stickers and despite the name of the package, no booze :( but if your 21 and above (it’s an all ages show) and show me proof of ID, I’ll probably buy you a beer too.

Now what’s better than that? Maybe a 2nd event with bigger logo?!

You got it! on the 11th it’s a doubleshot event @ the Sage in Whittier California where we’ll do it all over again with some different bands. Two Psychobilly events, back to back..You gotta love California!

More information on the event at Black Cat’s Facebook Even Page HERE

And below is a little segment we did on Evil Devil… so you can get a preview of what you can expect from our good Italian amigos.. which turns out has a kick as psychobilly scene as well I hear.

Enjoy and hope to see you there!

Another great punk show in Medellin, Colombia

MEDELLIN, COLOMBIA

"Feria de Las Flores" Fever in Medellin

Sleep deprivation! I hate sleep deprivation. However, sometimes, it just can’t be avoided. I’m in Medellin, Colombia for a variety of reasons and the beginning of my trip happened to coincide with the end of the big “Feria de las Flores” festival, Medellin’s biggest festival of the year so the place is crawling with tourists and Gringos just like me.

Hotels are packed and I swear I am hearing English almost as much as Spanish. Medellin has been invaded by Gringos from the world over! My first few nights I stayed at the noisiest hostel / hotel I HAVE EVER in my life stayed in and that is saying a lot my friends, hence my sleep deprivation. The hostel in question is Tiger Paw. Nice people but avoid like the plague if you, like me, need a more than 2 hours sleep per night.

Today I’m in a much better (and cheaper!) hotel and I intend to catch up on sleep and after I do I may re-read this post and say “uh-oh” what was I thinking”, so you are forewarned, the thoughts may be half baked and the errors numerous. Sorry. I blame the Paw, Tiger Paw.

Andres from Los Suziox, gives me a punk tour in El Central (Downtown) Medellin

If you can’t sleep, may as well party right? Well, lucky for me in addition to the Feria de Las Flores, there was also a great punk show being staged in downtown (El Centro) Saturday night and my buddy Andres from the Medellin punk band “Los Suziox” promised to guide me there so I could enjoy some good punk music, Medellin style!

Filmmaker & Musician, Jose Juan Posado

The bill featured a band my amigo, bad ass filmmaker and punk musician, Jose Juan Posado played with when he lived in South Florida a few years back, a kick ass female fronted band called “Flees” hailing from Ft. Lauderdale.

Now you may be thinking, “punk in South Florida?”. Hey man, if they have punks in Cuba (be sure and see my interview with Cuban Punks from last December here) then they are bound to have some cool punk bands in SOFLO right? What’s more punk than hating on Fidel and fighting over Che’s legacy?

From what I hear from Jose Juan, there is quiet a scene in South Florida.  I mean there was bound to be a pretty healthy backlash against the silly stereotypical South Florida music scene and Flees seem to capture it  perfectly.

The lead singer, Elyse, is half Cuban/half Jewish (Jewban) and even though the band had some strong Latin roots it was Flees first time in Colombia and they seemed pumped to be there.

To kick the night off, Andres and I met at the San Alejo Market, a once  monthly market, held downtown in Parque Bolivar. I arrived really late just as the market was shutting down, which was a shame because it looked very cultural and really fun.

Punks in Parque Periodista

So Andres and I made our way over to Parque Periodista which is where many of Medellin’s punk contingent hang out. It was Saturday night and  the place was packed and the mood festive. I was happy to run into some of the new friends I had made my last trip in about a month ago.

Like many downtown areas in Latin America, the El Centro  area of Medellin is gritty and can be a little dangerous for a Gringo wandering alone at night with video equipment, so I was happy to be given the full punk tour by Andres.

El Centro is also  chock full of punk history going back all the way to the 1980′s when punk burst on the scene in Medellin.

From what I’ve heard, back then, it was dangerous to be a punk in Colombia because of the period of “La Violencia” and plain old intolerance. Hell it was tough to be a plain old civilian back then much less one who stuck out like an angry, sore thumb.

It seems the rebels and the government wanted the punks to take a side in the war and punks being punks, refused to side with either, alienating themselves from both sides, a dangerous position to be in during those times.

After spending significant time here, I think one of the reasons the punk scene is so strong in Colombia is that it was forged out of the war and narco traffic violence in the 80s and 90s. Like a wild flower growing in a trash dump,  one good thing came from all the misery and now both Colombia and the Colombian punk scene are on the upswing as witnessed by all the tourists visiting and punk bands touring (The Casualties last December, The Addicts coming in September, etc.).

Before the show

After hitting Parque Periodista we headed over to the venue to catch the show. The venue was Teatro Matacandelas and it wasn’t your typical hole in the wall dump where most punk shows are played by a long shot. It was a very nice acting theater with a great stage and bar area, clean bathrooms and really good sound.

Humano X

The show started late but kicked off with a really good ska band called Niquitown. Ska is really big in Latin America, the bands are first rate and these guys did not disappoint.

They were followed by two other local punk bands, one of which, Humano X, played together for the first time in 15 years.

I think my favorite band of the evening was the band that came on just before Flees, a garage punk band called “Los Sorners”. The lead singer was f’ing nuts (in a good way), the guitar player had  a Social Distortion tattoo but mostly their songs were just plain tight as hell and kicked ass (I have some video of these guys that I will post soon so stay tuned and you can judge for yourself).

Flees

Flees came on next. As I said this was their first foray to Colombia and Latin America in general but they had just finished a tour in the U.S. with GBH, one of my all time favorites.

Pit

I got to hang with these guys a little before the show and let me tell you they are really cool and good musicians to boot.  Elyse had issues with her microphone at the beginning but she kept going and handled it like a pro until they could get it fixed about 3 songs in.

I enjoyed Flees immensely, as did the rest of the crowd which actually seemed to know a song or two word for word, despite them all being in English. If you are ever in South Florida or Flees is in a city near you be sure and check them out. In the meantime enjoy the video below and check back soon for more updates from Colombia!

After the show

Oh, almost forgot, if you want to see the complete set of pics from the show, be sure and hit up the set from the night at our FLIKR Page here. Now I’m off to get some much needed sleep!

Casualties 20th Anniversary Show Rawks

Casualties Fan Tells You What He Thinks!

March 29th, 2010:

The Casualties 20th Anniversary party at Santos Party House in downtown NYC did not disappoint. By the time doors opened a little after 6pm there was a line of punks and fans down the block.

And true to the venue’s name, this felt more like a party, a celebration, a birthday than just a concert by some great punk bands.

Guilt Trip Opens For The Casualties

The evening started off with Guilt Trip, which played to a mostly full venue as people had arrived early. The punks didn’t need time to get going either, they circle pit was active almost from the get go.

Violent Society

By the time Violent Society took the stage the venue was packed and the excitement was building to a crescendo.

When the Unseen from Boston hit the stage, it was all out chaos. I’d never seen them live, but I’m glad I did. They didn’t let some equipment problems get in the way with delivering the audience a kick ass set, and the crowd was very patient while they fixed their gear.

Boston's "The Unseen"

When the Casualties hit the stage, opening with “Carry On The Flag” and “We Are All We Have”, the crowd was going nuts. The Casualties played a marathon set, incorporating lots of their older stuff from their 20 year repetoir to a very appreciative crowd.

Casualties Fans

The crowd was mixed as any NYC concert is, with punks of all shades and stripes, Asians, Latinos, Black, white, the whole damn rainbow as only you can find in New York City, the greatest punk city on the planet. It was also fairly mixed (for a punk show) with some females (some quite hot) tearing up the pit. There were punks of all ages, as you might expect for a band that’s been around for 20 years.

Young Casualties Fan With His Mom

I even spotted a young fan, the next generation of punks with his mom, both big Casualties fans and both sitting right up front at the stage.

The band was pumped for this show you could tell. These were their most hardcore of their hardcore fans, the officers of the Casualties Army if you will and they wanted to give them all they could.

Rick from "The Casualties"

Midway through the set, lead singer Jorge gave up the mic over to the crowd for a Ramones cover, while he changed shirts. The band ended the set with “Unknown Soldier” before the crowd demanded an encore and they came out for  a couple more songs before everyone hit the exits to a rainy, cold NYC night.

In The Circle Pit

I really love NYC and the punks of NYC, a really good bunch. I also love The Unseen and the Casualties, two really good and really down to earth punk bands who play for all their worth for their largely working class fans. I like everything but the NYC rain in March, which was the only thing that kept it from being a perfect night.

You can check out more pics from the evening at our flikr page be sure to tune in later in the week for videos from the evening.
