- Punk Musicians from Latin America & Caribbean Join Label’s Protest of Treatment of Cuban Punks –

New York, NY – December 7th, 2011 – Punk Outlaw® Records announced the release of their first compilation collection, Punktology Volume 1 – Free Cuba Now! The compilation features independent punk and hardcore music from Latin America and the Caribbean and is available on a variety of platforms including i-Tunes, Amazon Music , CD Baby and other leading digital music retailers.

The collection strives to showcase a variety of punk music from Latin America and the Caribbean to North American and European audiences.  The title “Free Cuba Now” was chosen to help bring attention to the fact that Cuban punks, as well as many other subcultures on the island nation of Cuba, still suffer from suppression of their freedom of expression at the hands of the Cuban government.

The musical compilation is the first from the fledgling music label and features artists covered in the documentary “Punktology”, which is currently in production at Punk Outlaw’s® production banner  and hopes to help shed light on the worldwide influence of punk music in unlikely places, like Cuba.

“While working on the documentary, I visited Cuba and witnessed firsthand the incredible lack of basic freedom of expression we take for granted in much of the western world, when one of our interviewees was arrested for simply speaking to us” states Robert G. Rose, Founder of Punk Outlaw Records and Executive Producer of Punktology. “Punk music is at its best when it’s railing against injustice. This music comes from a variety of bands from different countries, each with their own issues such as social inequality, government corruption and crippling poverty. Yet  freedom of expression is a basic human right that most enjoy and we think Cubans and all human beings deserve this right as well.” Rose continues.

Punk Outlaw Records has pledged 25% of the record label’s share of net profits to charitable organizations whose missions are to help Cubans, including, Cuba Skate, a U.S. based charity providing skateboarding equipment, clothing and better opportunities for Cuban youth.

Participating artists for the project hail from a variety of countries including: Los Suziox (Colombia), Rudos Wild (Uruguay), Anti-Everything (Trinidad), DMTR (Ecuador), El Terrible Y Los Mongoloides (Peru), Lokekeda (Colombia), Warning (Guatemala) and Fertil Miseria (Colombia).

Colombia’s I.R.A. – Punk Legends or Punk Royalty?

MEDELLIN, COLOMBIA - Last Friday I received a last minute invite by my good friends Andres (Los Suziox) and Faber (Rock in Medellin Festival) to a private concert by the incredible local punk band  I.R.A.

For those of you who don’t know I.R.A., here is a little info. It is so hard to believe from looking at them but the band has been around for over 25 years, since the 1980s and the early days of Medellin’s punk scene.

They’ve toured the U.S., including the legendary CBGB’s in NYC. They’ve had books written about them, been featured in several documentaries and most importantly they have put out some incredible punk music over the years and continue to do so.

But the thing I think I like most about I.R.A is their attitude. I first met them all, David (vocals/guitar), Monica (vocals/drums) and Duvan (bass/vocals) at The Casualties show in December 2009 and they gave me a short interview for Punk Outlaw (which you can see HERE).

Later that day I saw them play a kick ass set as they opened for The Casualties. Since then, I’ve seen them a few times doing things that really embody the spirit and solidarity of punk rock; like supporting their friends  Fertil Miseria to Rock Al Parque (Rock in the Park) in Bogota, creating a compilation CD to benefit a sick friend of theirs who had no place to live, etc.) and on and on.

Not to get all sappy or emotional here but I.R.A. represents everything I love about Punk Music. They play really good, raucous and socially conscious punk music and the fact that they care passionately about the world around them is obvious in their actions on and off stage.

But watching them play a small, private show for their punk friends (it was in a small but very cool video production studio), you could tell how the punk scene in Medellin really sticks together and I.R.A. provides much of the glue. There were people from many of the local bands like Los Suziox, Nacion Criminal, Dorados Rockabilly Trio, etc., and there were many familiar faces I’ve seen at shows here over the past couple of years covering the Colombian punk scene.

As I said, I.R.A. is the glue. They help hold the scene together and after over 25 years, I think their role as punk ambassadors for a city that has seen a lot during that period of time can’t be overstated.

Watching David being carried around on the shoulders of the crowd… watching the punks joking around with Monica’s “Boom Box”, but more than that.. feeling the positive energy from the crowd which was by and large sober (it was early), very mixed (plenty of punk females) and just overall putting out nothing but good vibes.

I had just come off a rough week. Feeling a little homesick for the U.S. for the 1st time really.

I was tired of living in small, cramped hotel rooms and dealing with my horrible Spanish which seems to have not improved one single bit in my 6 months in Latin America. Dealing with issues with my other project, Raw Travel, thinking maybe I’m doing nothing but wasting time and money and why am I here? I don’t belong here, etc.

Then I go to an I.R.A. show. I see my old friends. I feel the vibes. I hear the music. I see the show. Suddenly things get back into focus. This is why I’m here. To experience this and to try to communicate this to others. Maybe a little self important, probably very myopic and selfish and definitely over dramatic and emotional, but that is the way I felt at the time.

And if I had a rough week, I imagine how many others had it even rougher. Maybe no cramped hotel, in fact no place to stay and not enough money to get through the week? My problems were nothing. This is real, this is punk, this is I.R.A.

Unfortunately I had to leave early because I had a previous commitment on the other side of town.

Coincidence or not, my taxi driver that night was the coolest, funniest dude who felt obliged to play (and sing along to) some North American metal and rock music for me. I could barely hear the guy speak over the Metalica, U-2 (the old stuff, the good stuff, not the recent garbage) and eventually, The Ramones singing “Sheenah isssss a punk rocker…”, much less understand him but I didn’t ask him to turn it down. “Mas alto por favor” (more higher please, my Tarzan Spanish way of saying “turn it up”).

All in all the rest of the evening was one of the best nights I’ve had since coming to South America. I’m not sure why, can’t pinpoint it exactly, but I think it had something to do with seeing I.R.A., who are (I think I can safely say this without critique) a legendary punk band not just from Medellin but from Colombia..from South America.. actually, a legendary punk band period.

Bots @ Warped Tour and Other Genius Ramblings

UPDATE:
Here is an update from the previous post. The concert in Rio Negro in Medellin Colombia was canceled due to heavy rain in the area which is causing flooding. It’s been one of the wettest “winters” on record in South America and the result is many, many people on flood plains and near rivers have lost their homes. Just goes to show you that disaster comes in many forms, big and small and if you don’t hear about something, it doesn’t make it any less real.

I’m not sure how to help out but I do know that the good people of Vision Mundial (AKA “World Vision” in the U.S.) do a great work here in Colombia (and all over) for people in need and are a good start.

Secondly, a bit of better news, the fine people from the Bots sent me some photos that, how should we say are a little better quality than my little BS digital that I used last summer at the Afro-Punk Festival in Brooklyn (damn, now why was I so lazy not to bring out the big guns, the Sony or the Cannon?).  Oh, and they have the additional benefit of being from this year’s warped tour.. so not only are they of better quality, they are more timely as well.. so my good fortune is yours. Ladies and gentlemen, the Bots on the warped tour.. Thanks Emily for the fine pics.

After a brief stop in Miami I’m back in my new home away from home,  Medellin, Colombia, and just in time too as there is, tadaahhh… a big punk show on Sunday which I’ll be hitting and if you happen to be here, you should too. Now it starts @ 9AM (won’t be there for the opening act I can tell you right now) and it goes until 9PM (But I will be there for the final act!).

It’s 12 hours of good old fashioned local Colombian punk including a rare 2011 appearance by our buddies “Los Suziox” , now that my friends is punk to the core!

Now if you are one of the many folks who read this humble little blog and are in the U.S. this summer then you gotta get out to the Warped Tour.

The tour is going into it’s umpteeth year and is really first rate and I dare to say the organizer, Kevin Lymon has done more to keep punk alive in the U.S. than most anyone. Of course there are lots of non punk rock acts as well. Still, when I grow up I want to be just like Kevin.

You may remember last summer that I raved about a young duo called “The Bots” after seeing them perform live at the Afro-Punk festival in Brooklyn? (see POST HERE).

Well this year, the Bots are on the Warped tour and I predict will probably be bustin’ out as more people get to sample ‘em. I’ve been listening to songs off their debut CD and the more I listen the more I like.

So if you hit the Warped Tour make sure you go see these guys and let me know what you think.

Punk Rock – Medellin Style

It’s been a 2 month delay (what can I say I’ve been traveling a lot!) but we finally got the pics up from the big “Rock en Medellin” concert last November in, you guessed it, Medellin, Colombia.

If you’ve been following this blog for a while, you know I’m very high on the punk scene in Medellin. It’s a great scene with a really intense and friendly community of hardcore punk fans with very some talented bands to boot.

Not the least of which is Punk Outlaw Records’ own “Los Suziox” who performed to an enthusiastic hometown crowd at Rock en Medellin.

New Music – From Psychobilly to Pop Punk

Social Distortion

Not sure what’s in the water these days but there is a lot of new music on the horizon. I mean Social Distortion has a new CD out in a matter of days and that happens less often than a presidential election (The last Social D. full release was in 2004).

But a healthy music scene isn’t just judged by the legends touring and putting out new music, but new bands bursting onto the scene.

For me 2010 was a great year of discovering new music from many, many diverse places. Off the top of my head my new music discoveries that are still sticking with me include the “Cobra Skulls” which I saw the Knitting Factory in NYC and wrote about HERE.

Other cool punk bands I discovered in 2010 were from Chicago (I gotta get there soon) called “Juicehead” which I heard on Sirius radio and another one called “Pegboy” which a friend recommended.

On the international front, new music I discovered in 2010 included my boys “Rudos Wild” a punkabilly band from Uruguay and “Los Suziox” a talented punk band from Colombia after visits there for the documentary Punktology.

2011 is off to a quick start as a couple of new bands have hit me up recently telling me about their new releases and while I normally only write or share about bands I’ve actually seen, I thought I’d share the info with you guys, because why should I keep all the goodies to myself.

The first is an indie pop punk band called Moovalya from Tucson, Arizona. Their sound is very radio friendly and you could definitely imagine them on the Warped Tour some day.And while my taste run a little more narrow and a lot more hard core, there is no arguing the guys are good musicians. You can check out their video below and judge for yourself.

On the complete other end of the spectrum and next up on my radar is a new LA psychobilly band called “Cold Blue Rebels” who have a debut CD coming out as well.  Now eventually, when I’m finished with my South American tour of duty sometime in 2011, we’ll be heading to Los Angeles to live, work and generally soak up the punk, psychobilly and rockabilly scenes. Cold Blue Rebels give me a chance to get a nice head start.

1) HOW LONG HAS COLD BLUE REBELS BEEN AROUND?

CBR has been around just over a year now. Things have happened incredibly fast for us. The timing for this band has been perfect. We’ve gone from formation, rehearsals, gigs to record deal and release in one year. Dreams really DO come true!

2) HOW DO YOU DESCRIBE YOUR MUSIC?

Rockin’ Horror Psychobilly, heavy on the ‘billy! A cross between the Stray Cats and Alice Cooper, with tongue firmly planted in The Munstermobile.

3) WHO ARE SOME OF YOUR MUSICAL INFLUENCES?

Ramones, Gene Vincent, Elvis, Nekromantix, The Clash, Stray Cats, Herman Munster, Johnny Cash, KISS.
4) TELL ME ABOUT THE NEW CD? IS THIS YOUR FIRST? WHERE CAN PEOPLE BUY IT?

Yeah, this is our debut CD and it’s called “Blood, Guts n’ Rock & Roll” It is distributed worldwide by Horror High Records and is also available online at AMAZON & iTUNES:

Our CD has 12 tracks on it including a psycho cover of Wanda Jackson’s “Riot In Cell Block #9” , and every song on it is definitely going to stick in your zombie fucking heads! There is some neo-rockabilly, some punk, and even some doo wop on there! We wanted to make an album that stands out from the rest of the psychobilly bands out there, and I think we’ve done it!!  It was important to us to not just be another “punk band with an upright bassplayer”… We’ve got some chops in this band, and when you got it baby, flaunt it!

5) WHATS GOING ON WITH THE PSYCHOBILLY SCENE IN LA RIGHT NOW? IS IT GATHERING STEAM?

It depends who you ask really. I’ve been to gigs that are just slammin’, many events by Black Cat Entertainment and Tiger Mask and other promoters around town. Some of the bands are legendary! Guana Bats, The Polecats, Mad Sin… But what I love are the crowds… when it’s an all ages event, they are just tops!

6) ANY PLANS TO TOUR? WHERE?

Yes, definitely A LOT of touring in 2011!  We’re doing a Northwest run with The Rocketz during March, and expect to hit the mid-west and Great Lakes shortly after that. Meanwhile we are constantly touring the Southwest all year long because we are conveniently based in Los Angeles.

7) WHY DO YOU THINK PSYCHOBILLY IS SO POPULAR ON THE WEST COAST?

I think it’s partly because there are many great bands from here, or at least based here. Bands like Tiger Army, Nekromantix, The Rocketz, The Chop Tops. We’ve also got great festivals here that support the genre like Viva Las Vegas, Ink & Iron, and a long list of Car Shows and car clubs.

California is the perfect place to live if you are into rat-rods and old cars, too, which many psychos and ‘billys are into… (I oughta know, I drive a ’56 Ford that I call “Ratty!”) Cool cars and rock n roll music have always gone together. Mix in a little old time California surf music and culture and some classic Hollywood horror film imagery… it’s really the perfect place for all these ingredients to come together.

New York, NY September 14th, 2010 – The AIM Tell-A-Vision® Group (AIM TV) announced today the launch of “Punk Outlaw Records” as part of their “Punk Outlaw® Productions content banner. The digital record label will initially focus on 360 degree partnerships importing music from emerging punk & independent artists.

AIM TV Founder, Robert G. Rose, formed Punk Outlaw Records when traveling abroad gathering material for his documentary “Punktology…The Worldwide Influence of Punk”. Rose witnessed firsthand that the DIY (Do It Yourself) spirit of punk music was very much alive and thriving in places where artists sacrificed tremendously to make music in the face of incredibly challenging circumstances.

The new record label’s roster of recently signed artists include “Rudos Wild” (Rough and Wild), a raucous, in your face punk and punkabilly band from Montevideo, Uruguay that has been performing since 2003. La lista de artistas recientemente firmadas por el nuevo sello discográfico incluyen “Rudos Wild”, una banda punk estridente, en tu cara, y punkabilly desde Montevideo, Uruguay, que se ha estado llevando a cabo desde 2003. Rudos Wild siempre se ha interpretado directamente como punk rock clásico cual es fuertemente influenciado por el rockabilly, psychobilly y artistas como Social Distortion, The Misfits, Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, Stray Cats, The Clash, Tiger Army, The Living End y Reverend Horton Heat para nombrar algunos. Rudos Wild ha independientemente grabado dos discos de larga duración y salieron de gira en Uruguay, Argentina y Chile.

Punk Outlaw Records también ha recientemente firmado “Los Suziox” una talentosa banda de punk que provienen de los barrios de clase trabajadora de Medellín, Colombia. Los Suziox (LSZX) ha registrado varias pistas de forma independiente con un gran repertorio de canciones socialmente consciente de que ha cosechado legiones de fieles seguidores en su natal Colombia y en toda América Latina. Las influencias musicales de LSZX son muy variadas e incluyen bandas como Stiff Little Fingers, Klamydia, The Addicts, The Clash, Konflikt, Ramones, Minor Threat, The Meteors & Stray Cats por nombrar algunos.
