Agnostic Front & Mad Ball Interview

Freddy (Madball) & Roger (Agnostic Front)

Good to see my old show “LatiNation” keeping punk on their radar screen. You’re smart, so you already know this, but most people don’t. Latin people do more than just listen to salsa, marengue and hip-hop.. yes, even in New York City.

Enjoy!

Cobra Skulls – Reno’s Pride

// April 28th, 2010 // 1 Comment » // Videos

My friend Mike from NY Hardtimes invited me to a COBRA SKULLS concert a few weeks back but I was unable to go. But it did get me to looking for their music on i-tunes and I found their music pretty damn good, so I downloaded a few. When I heard they were coming back to the Knitting Factory in Brooklyn, I decided what the hell, I’ll take a break from Manhattan and travel all the way to Brooklyn, NYC and check these guys out.

Feeling adventurous, I took the 20 minute train ride out and got their way too early. The warm up bands were pretty good, but I had to sit through a torturous set of Broadway Calling, an emo style band. They were really good musicians but I really, really hate that kind of music. It’s just worthless to me. I recognize the diversity of musical taste and I respect it. I just wished I had known cause I def. would have skipped it cause not only do I not like that type of music, it actually puts me in a foul mood (granted not hard to do these days, I’m feeling especially surly for some reason).

Anyway, when Cobra Skulls took the stage the sound person never got quite right on the lead singer’s (Devin) microphone. You could barely hear him. I’m sure Knitting Factory has great facilities but this one, they missed. Nevertheless, I did enjoy the show and I’m going to check out more of Cobra Skulls music because they are raucous, harmonious even and their lyrics are dead on.

Check em out if you get a  chance. In the meantime, below is a low quality video from last night’s show and hit up Punk Outlaw’s FLIKR PAGE for more pics from the evening.

Enjoy!

Casualties Fan Tells You What He Thinks!

March 29th, 2010:

The Casualties 20th Anniversary party at Santos Party House in downtown NYC did not disappoint. By the time doors opened a little after 6pm there was a line of punks and fans down the block.

And true to the venue’s name, this felt more like a party, a celebration, a birthday than just a concert by some great punk bands.

Guilt Trip Opens For The Casualties

The evening started off with Guilt Trip, which played to a mostly full venue as people had arrived early.The punks didn’t need time to get going either, they circle pit was active almost from the get go.

Violent Society

By the time Violent Society took the stage the venue was packed and the excitement was building to a crescendo.

When the Unseen from Boston hit the stage, it was all out chaos. I’d never seen them live, but I’m glad I did. They didn’t let some equipment problems get in the way with delivering the audience a kick ass set, and the crowd was very patient while they fixed their gear.

Boston's "The Unseen"

When the Casualties hit the stage, opening with “Carry On The Flag” and “We Are All We Have”, the crowd was going nuts. The Casualties played a marathon set, incorporating lots of their older stuff from their 20 year repetoir to a very appreciative crowd.

Casualties Fans

The crowd was mixed as any NYC concert is, with punks of all shades and stripes, Asians, Latinos, Black, white, the whole damn rainbow as only you can find in New York City, the greatest punk city on the planet.It was also fairly mixed (for a punk show) with some females (some quite hot) tearing up the pit. There were punks of all ages, as you might expect for a band that’s been around for 20 years.

Young Casualties Fan With His Mom

I even spotted a young fan, the next generation of punks with his mom, both big Casualties fans and both sitting right up front at the stage.

The band was pumped for this show you could tell. These were their most hardcore of their hardcore fans, the officers of the Casualties Army if you will and they wanted to give them all they could.

Rick from "The Casualties"

Midway through the set, lead singer Jorge gave up the mic over to the crowd for a Ramones cover, while he changed shirts. The band ended the set with “Unknown Soldier” before the crowd demanded an encore and they came out for  a couple more songs before everyone hit the exits to a rainy, cold NYC night.

In The Circle Pit

I really love NYC and the punks of NYC, a really good bunch. I also love The Unseen and the Casualties, two really good and really down to earth punk bands who play for all their worth for their largely working class fans. I like everything but the NYC rain in March, which was the only thing that kept it from being a perfect night.

You can check out more pics from the evening at our flikr page be sure to tune in later in the week for videos from the evening.

Backstage with the Casualties

Backstage with the Casualties

My amigo Jorge from ColombianPunk.com is helping to promote the Casualties for the Bogota show in December. He’s in town (NYC) staying with me and we went to the Casualties show in at Nokia Times Square. Jorge was able to talk our way back stage (with me translating, scary shit if you’ve heard me speak Spanish) thanks to the super cool folks with the band, Nokia event staff & management.  The guys very graciously helped film a promo to get the word out about the Bogota and Medellin Colombia gigs.. Super cool guys and a great show afterwards. Looking forward to seeing them in South America.. should be nutz. I”m heading to Mexico and an undisclosed Caribbean island tomorrow and I haven’t even packed, but I’ll try to get more video up, including the promo as soon as possible.

The Legendary Misfits in NYC – Halloween 2009

// November 1st, 2009 // No Comments » // Videos

Is it Halloween or just a Misfits concert? Both! The legendary Misfits (what’s left of them) played BB King in NYC on Halloween night and it was a sweaty, hot, loud and smelly mess.. just like a good punk show should be. The Misfits played their two new songs especially written for the occasion now available on i-tunes and they are pretty good as well as their classsics incuding “We Are 138″ and they ended with “Die, Die My Darling” as you can see in the video here. I got to the gig a little late, so I apologize for being so far from the stage but this was as close as I could get without being slung around in the pit.. and I was still getting bounced around quite a bit, as you can witness by the shaky, jerky flip cam work. Halloween in NYC with the Misfits.. does it get any better?

Legendary Youth Brigade Perform “I Hate My Life” in NYC

// October 24th, 2009 // No Comments » // Events, Videos

So I’m all amped for the big Youth Brigade/Casualties show at Cafe Europa in Brooklyn, NYC on Saturday 9/19/09. I mean, I literally postpone a couple of trips to catch one of my all time favorite hard core bands the Casualties. I just bought their recent CD off i-tunes “We are all we have” and i have to say it is excellent stuff. I also want to see Youth Brigade, I mean these are two legendary punk bands, why aren’t they playing in Manhattan?

Well, I figure its going to be a packed show, so I prepare for the day by going to see a special documentary screening of “Let Them Know” the story of the Youth Brigade and BYO Records. I don’t regret spending a couple hours of a beautiful college football Saturday holed up in a dark theater checking this doc out. This is one good documentary and it deals with the often overlooked West Coast punk scene so often overshadowed by the scenes in NYC and England. With interviews with Fat Mike from NOFX, Seven Seconds, Bouncing Souls and of course the Stern brothers from Youth Brigade, it is a truly entertaining, mostly hilarious and slightly uplifting documentary. It really made me appreciate what punks went through in the 80s in the U.S.

I arrived at Cafe Europa around 8:30PM and was dismayed to find out I arrived just in time to hear the last :20-:30 of the Casualties “Unknown Soldier” with about 100 or so punks in full fury in the pit. That was it? Final song!? WTF? What kind of punk show is over at 8:30PM on a Saturday in NYC none the less? What do punks have to be in bed by 10pm or something?

I was really dismayed, proceeded to down 4 beers in a row but the evening was almost salvaged when I met Shawn Stern, lead singer of Youth Brigade, who was out mingling with the crowd before the show.

I congratulated him on an excellent documentary (he executive produced and got the most air time). We also discussed the punk scene down in Central and Latin America. Shawn’s a big surfer and he indicated he’s ready to tour down there and get some good surfing in.

He’s a cool guy, as expected and YB proceeded to put on a hell of a show. Here are a couple of clips for your viewing pleasure. YB and Shawn, thanks for all you’ve done for punk… oh and thanks for salvaging my night.
