Hillbilly Punk Heaven In Miami!

// January 27th, 2013 // No Comments » // Videos

churchills pub

I’m in Miami. In South Beach specifically (long story) where the uncool come to pretend to be cool. Where tourist from NYC and middle America and all over the world flock to act like self absorbed a*&holes and pretend they are ballers. Where a cup of coffee cost $4 and even the local dry cleaner has a “tip me” cup out. The dry cleaner? For real? Traffic is a mess and it’s overrun with dumb asses, more than typical as it’s January and much of the U.S. of A is slogging through arctic cold and snow flurries.

So the idiots arrive and clog up the highways and byways and drive all manner of F’ed up (And I’ve lived and driven abroad and I know F’d up driving when I see it and when I do it). Get your car insurance policy updated before you come down. Load up the wallet before you come down and get out the lube before you come down because if you come to South Beach… your going to get screwed. And not the fun kind either.

I’m here for work but I had to escape the silly South Beach scene if just for a moment and hang out with some genuine people. Luckily for me and for the rest of Miami whom I can only imagine hate South Beach even more than I, there are plenty of genuine articles where you can escape the buffoonary and have legitimate experiences.

Little Havana if you are into Cuban culture. Little Haiti if you want to feel you’re in the 3rd world (and I say that with the utmost respect, Haitians struggle mightily at home and come here and it’s not much better, but at least they have a shot here).

And if you’re into the punk and underground music scene, there really is just one place you need to know (though I’m sure there are more), it’s Churchill’s Pub, THE spot to go for punk and alternative music and as far as I know, not a single bit of EDM (Electronic Dance Music I think it’s called, or is that Electronic Douchebag Music?… I’m not sure). It’s also a spot where some neighboring Haitian entrepreneurs will watch your car in the parking lot for you for a couple of bucks and make sure “nothing happens to it”.

On this night, my buddies from Los Bastardos Magnificos weren’t just running things, they were actually playing. What a treat to finally see these guys live and performing music near and dear to my heart, hillbilly music.

Let’s face it, by and large the Nashville Country music scene is garbage. Nashville’s polished, pre-fab sound makes Justine Bieber look like Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. These days, California is more authentic country than Nashville with it’s historic Bakersfield sound of Marty Robbins, Buck Owens, Dwight Yoakam and let us not forget the original punkabilly kings.. you know I’m going to say it.. wait for it.. Mike Ness and Social Distortion.. whew.. got that out.. feel.. much.. better… now. Then there is X and geez, the list goes on and I’m tired of name dropping.

Well Florida may be giving California, Tennessee and Texas a run for their money and for my money, I prefer the authentic punk-country crooning of bands like Los Bastardos Magnificos. I’ve written about the big scene just north of Miami in Lake Worth where bands like the “Darling Sweets” and “Everymen” come down to play at Churchills and inject a bit of their homegrown hillbilly punk into the metropolitan mecca of Miami. (Missed it? Read it HERE)

This is a scene worth taking notice. If you didn’t know where you were, you’d probably swear your in Austin, but this ain’t Texas it’s Miami and it’s a reminder that Florida is a big, diverse state and as much as I love the diversity of immigrant Latin cultures in Miami, the red-neckish musical stylings one would think more at home in  North Florida or South Georgia is expressed right here in Miami is a refreshing change of pace. Country punk is alive and well at Churchill’s Pub (minus all that pesky ignorance and intolerance).

Next up was a one man performance from Joe Buck Yourself, he with the wild haircut and wild eyed stare as he furiously pounded on the footpedal drum and simultaneously strummed his rust colored guitar. I have one word for Joe Buck Yourself and it’s INTENSE.

I wish I’d been able to stick around for Holly Hunt, a 2 person sludge /noize? rock act I’ve enjoyed immensely before and can only say good things about. But as I said I am here working and it’s an “early to bed, early to rise” regimen for me.

I also would have liked to seen the Anti-Seen, but tonight, there were not to be seen, at least by me. But you can check out their scene at their site HERE. (OK, enough Seen jokes). From what I hear they kick it old school punk rock which means hitting the stage at midnight or later I assumed, so I hightailed home to bed (actually to work, yes I had to work some more.. feel sorry for me yet?).

I’m in Miami the rest of the week.. did I mention I was working? But it’s good to know Churchill’s is there. I may have to go back and get a “real people” fix if the whole South Beach silliness gets to me again. I’m pretty sure it will. So stay tuned.

Hungarian punk/pyschcobilly band Silvershine headed to the U.S.

// September 27th, 2012 // No Comments » // Events, Videos

In June/July I traveled to Budapest, Hungary and was blown away by some of the excellent psychobilly bands there. One of the bands I was most impressed with was Silvershine. Their live performance simply rocked. Missed the write up? See it HERE.

I’m heading to France & Spain next in my continuing effort to bring you pics, video, sights and sounds from the global punk, psychobilly and rockabilly scenes and I’m pretty excited. But I’m also pretty bummed that I’m going to miss our friends from Silvershine as they head to the U.S. and Los Angeles to be part of what looks to be a damned good line up which includes the Rocketz, Los Difuntos, Los Creepers and more.

If you are on the west coast of the U.S., don’t miss your shot to see these guys who are more than a little bit punk and more than a little bit pyschobilly, but still not really 100% punkabilly either.  I don’t know how to describe them. I guess you’ll have to see for your self. More info on the show HERE.

And here is a little video clip we took of the guys when we were in Budapest in June.

Behind the Scenes Dorados Music Video Shoot

// August 16th, 2012 // 3 Comments » // Photos

MEDELLIN, COLOMBIA:

I finally made it to my “2nd home” of Medellin, Colombia and despite the big “Feria de los Flores” (Festival of Flowers) festivities going on all week, I immediately got to work.

First stop was lunch with my amigo and Dorados Rockabilly Trio founder and lead singer Felipe Ossa.

Felipe and I discussed the recent lineup changes, (San the new bass guitarist has joined Felipe on guitar & vocals and Camilo on drums to round out the trio), the surprising success of their first music video “Bettie Page… Donde Estas?” (missed it? See below!) and their future plans (could 2013 could see a U.S. Dorados tour?).

We decided that we should follow up the smashing success of Bettie Page with another music video and we selected the infectious “Diamond Girl” from their release “Conflicto de Espacio Blanco” (White Space Conflict) as a good follow up.

Felipe secured a local Harley Motorcycle paint and repair shop in the neighborhood of Estadio, just past the casinos and gaming halls of downtown Medellin.

The location was perfect and Felipe’s brother Pablo really saved the day, helping me out with a 2nd camera for the shoot. I’m really happy with the footage and can’t wait to get back to the U.S. to see what the Russians and I can do with it.

We were able to fire off a few low quality stills of the evening for your viewing pleasure. Note the sick Dorados Rockabilly Trio T shirt I’m sporting! Never fear that shirt design should be coming soon to a Punk Outlaw Store near you real soon.

In the meantime, we are in search of a rockabilly video vixen for the Diamond Girl lead role, preferably in the Los Angeles or New York City area, but all should feel free to apply. If interested, just shoot us an email to info@punkoutlawrecords.com and we’ll be back in touch as soon as we can.

Yee-hawww! Deep Southern Fried Punk & Punkabilly! umm..ummm.. Good!

// March 30th, 2012 // 1 Comment » // Photos, Videos

Just about an hour and a half north of Miami, near West Palm Beach is Lake Worth, Florida. Turns out Lake Worth is home to a plethora of artist and musicians and quiet possibly… an even bigger musical movement.

Why do artists choose Lake Worth over nearby West Palm or Ft. Lauderdale? Because it’s cheaper of course!

Cheap(er) living has always attracted artists… from the early days of punk and the Velvet Underground when Soho NYC  had industrial lofts where artists lived or squatted rent free… to the Lower East Side and the infamous Alphabet City, when living there pretty much guaranteed a mugging … to today where NYC artists and musicians are more likely to live in Brooklyn and Los Angeles artists live in places like Silverlake or Echo Park.

…and in South Florida you have Lake Worth, Florida where a burgeoning music scene unlike any other is taking hold.

I was able to interview the bands from the recent Wayward Parade which took place at the legendary Churchill’s Pub in Miami last weekend.. smack in the middle of the Ultra Music Festival and the Winter Music Conference.

The crowds at South Beach were huge and if you read my article a few entries back, I referred to these electronic musical gatherings, rather harshly perhaps, as a “Douchebag Convention”. Be that as it may, the crowd on this particular Saturday night at Churchills was smaller but decidedly more interesting with nary a douchebag in sight.

Among the crowd was a cool, lanky cat called “Scarecrow Jenkins” who actually was one of the musicians who played a variety of instruments for a band called “Los Bastardos Magnificos (The Magnificent Bastards).  Also on the bill was Darling Sweets, a really talented and enjoyable female fronted band that I really dug. There was a slightly harder, possibly more inbred band (just joking guys!) called “Everymen” who whipped the crowd into a frenzy. It was like Deliverance meets the Warped Tour! I loved it!

There was also a band called Holly Hunt.. (no relation to the famous actress, though I heard she tried to stop them from using the name) who played some SLUDGE which is the the word I heard someone describe this non-vocal almost ambient sounding combo of drums and incredibly distorted and loud guitar riffs. Call it what you will, it works.

One of my favorite acts of the evening was Diablo Dimes, a retro duo featuring a sexy, sweet little songbird along with her guitar and kazoo playing band mate. I felt like I was hearing Johnny and June Carter Cash mixed with Josephine Baker reincarnated, along with some good old fashioned dixieland or boogie woogie.

In addition to the aforementioned kazoo, there were banjos, fiddles, washboards, accordions and stand up basses a plenty at this gig. The musicianship on display was evident. Many played multiple instruments in multiple bands.

The comraderie of the crew from Lake Worth was obvious and combined with the history of Churchills, made for a great atmosphere.

Is Lake Worth going to be the next Seattle for this… this.. this hillbilly/punk/Americana or whatever you call it type of music?  Maybe. But if so, never fear. No need to pull out your flannel shirt from the closet. You’d be better served getting a pair of overalls or hitting the thrift shops if you want to fit in with this artistic crew of talented musical misfits.

It’s country, it’s punk, its retro, it’s rockabilly and its none and all of the above. It’s a bit confusing so just believe me.. it’s good and you need to check them out for yourself.

Paisa Punkabilly Kings… The Dorados!

// June 6th, 2011 // 3 Comments » // Photos, Videos

The Dorados Rockabilly Trio

I knew there had to be a rockabilly scene in Colombia. I just figured it would be in Bogota, not in Medellin where the Paisas (people from Medellin), rock out to the sounds of punk and metal to such legendary bands as I.R.A. and Los Suziox along with other really talented cats like Los Sornos, Industrial punks Nues, the hardcore Fertil Miseria, Desadaptadoz and newer bands like Lokekeda, Alkoholema, Insurgentes, Grito and Nacion Criminal.

I mean there are so many good, solid punk bands in Medellin I’m discovering them by accident all the time.

Dolman - Bass & Vocals

I guess I should not have been surprised after discovering that yes; there is indeed a rockabilly scene in Medellin! Or should I qualify that as there is a rockabilly band in Medellin that is doing its best to establish a scene. They are the Dorados Rockabilly Trio.

Now I discovered them (or should I say they discovered me) through my good buddies Andres (Los Suziox) and Faber (Medellin Rock Festival) at the Medellin Moto Show a few weeks back.

I immediately hit it off with the guys. Felipe Ossa, the bands singer / lead guitar who spends some time with family in New Mexico had just been to the U.S. and witnessed his first Social Distortion in concert there so we had a lot to talk about. Felipe looks a little bit like a young, Latin Mike Ness himself (before the jail time) don’t you think?

Carlos - Drums & Vocals

At the time, I was headed out of the country to Ecuador to work on my side project “Raw Travel” but I promised you that when I returned I’d be featuring some music from these guys.

Good to his word Felipe stayed in touch with me and I made it out to their rehearsal on Friday night.

They played a good mix of covers of rock-n-roll classics (Richie Valens, Eddie Cochran, etc.) as well as a few of their originals which I really dug.

Felipe's tricked out guitar

We had some studio time left over so we ripped through a version of Cold Feelings (Social Distortion) & Ring of Fire (Johnny Cash/Social Distortion) with yours truly at the mic before I let the guys finish it out with “Don’t’ Think Twice” (Bob Dylan/Mike Ness) and “Reach for the Sky (Social Distortion).

Rehearsal was a roomfull of Social D. fans

Good rockabilly finished off with some punk and punkabilly… Now that my friends is a good couple of hours well spent.

Well, proving that I ALWAYS tell the truth MOST of the time, here ya go, a video clip of their original song “Bettie Page” from their rehearsal session is below.

STAY TUNED: And coming up, pics and genius insights from my recent Ecuadorian Punk Odyssey and, keep your fingers crossed, a complete interview and feature on the Dorados Rockabilly Trio.

Just Relased: Rudos Wild “No Toleramos” Official Video

// May 12th, 2011 // 1 Comment » // Videos

Back in February I made a return trip to Montevideo, Uruguay to see my old pals from Rudos Wild. A lot had happened in the year I was away. I signed the guys to my fledgling digital record label “Punk Outlaw Records”, I had begun work on a new travel show “Raw Travel” and I had moved from the U.S. to begin living abroad in Colombia, South America.

Rudos Wild Concert in Montevideo Feb '11

What hadn’t changed was the quality of the music of Rudos Wild and the pure, genuine energy of the band, when they are playing and when they aren’t.

We took advantage of my trip down there to hang out some more. I taped one of their live concerts, chilled at Peyo’s house at a big meat filled BBQ and ended up featuring the band in Raw Travel’s episode on Uruguay/Argentina.

Oh and we also shot a little music video for them for their song, “No Toleramos” (We Won’t Tolerate), which I just love.

Well the video has finally been edited and you get to peek it here first.

Leo 666

It’s dedicated to Leo 666, Rudos Wild bass player who’s been ill and in the hospital. Maybe you should think about eating a steak every now and then amigo! (Leo 666 is a strict vegan in Uruguay of all places, possibly the most meat eating per capita on the planet). Seriously, stay strong my friend and get well soon.

Special thanks to Renzo Devia, Moses Naranjo and Camilo Mendoza who helped shoot and edit the video.

Let me know what you think.

Returning to The Scene of the Crime

// February 11th, 2011 // No Comments » // Events

You may recall that about a year ago I was visiting Buenos Aires, Argentina winding up a 3 country trip (Chile, Argentina, Uruguay) when an unscrupulous and fake taxi driver took advantage when I let down my guard.

My man took off with my cameras, passport, computer and most importantly, 3 weeks worth of footage that I had shot for Punktology, the documentary about the worldwide influence of punk music. I chased him down the streets of Buenos Aires in a vicious rain storm like a mad man to no avail.

New Friends from Mundo Bizzaro in Feb. 2010

If you missed it my little adventure, well you can read about the debacle HERE. After years of travel in Latin America it was the first time I had been robbed and it was a pretty low point for me. But as with most bad things that happen in life, there was some good sprinkled in.

After briefly entertaining the idea of cutting the trip short and heading back to NYC, I decided to forge ahead to Montevideo, Uruguay with an intent to beg, borrow or steal (ooops, not steal!) a camera to salvage some footage form my month long trip in really way down south, South America.

Batra at Rehearsal at Salon Pueyrredon in Buenos Aires

Turns out the punks of Montevideo were awesome and came through big time, borrowing various cameras so that I could book some pretty decent interviews. You can still check out in the archives if you like (type “Uruguay” or “Montevideo” in the search bar). Thanks to my amigos in Montevideo, I didn’t return to NYC empty handed.

Now, It’s time I head back, back to the scene of the crime. Back to Buenos Aires not to exact my revenge (though I have day dreamed about what it would be like to see the bald little weasel who took my stuff), but to go back to Salon Pueyrredon to take in a punk show; back to Mundo Bizarro to check out the rockabilly scene and back to Montevideo, Uruguay, where this time Ill have my own camera (with proper sound equipment).  The punks from Buenos Aires and Montevideo should be well represented.

This time, in addition to covering the punk, rockabilly and psychobilly scenes for you, I’m also working on another new, exciting project, a travel show called “Raw Travel” check it out HERE.

Because I’m working on dual projects this time, I have a really tight agenda but here is a preview of what you can expect.

First in Buenos Aires I plan on passing by Salon Pueyreddon again to catch up with my friends there and see how things have changed in a year. This spot is a good spot to see a good live rock or punk show. It’s always full of good people like Kita, the psychobilly bartender, or Maria who runs publicity for the venue or Batra one of the owners or Anita the rockabilly queen.

Psychobilly fan Kituh @ Salon Pueyrredon

We will also stop by Mundo Bizarro where we hope to hook up with manager Pinata  to document the rockabilly scene in BA as well as hopefully repeat our interview with local rockabilly band Los Primitivos which never got published.

If Dos Minutos is around, we’ll hook up with them again and we hope to drop in on a rehearsal with our buddies at Drop Dead Dreams.

Rudos Wild After Rehearsal in Feb. 2010

In Montevideo, we are planning on shooting Rudos Wild for Raw Travel and shoot some footage for a kick ass music video, beginning with their concert at the Apartado Bar on 2/18/11 for Punk Outlaw Records.

Then on 2/21 we’ll be shooting the city sites for Raw Travel. We hope to swing  by our buddies at the Clash City Rockers and Decibilios bars as well!

And if there are punks in Salta, Argentina (we know there are), we hope we’ll be able to tell you all about it as we head there for 4 days of Raw Travel.

But the best part of any trip are the unplanned, spontaneous things that happen. Who knows what might pop up, so stay tuned.

I try to stay open to the unexpected, embrace what the universe throws at me, but I truly hope I’m not chasing a fake taxi driver down the streets of Buenos Aires this time. But life is crazy. You never know.

Social Distortion Performs “Prison Bound” @ Wantagh, NYC show

Mike Ness

Yup, I’ve been to jail. Twice! So I guess I’m twice as hard core yo! However, since I cried like a baby the 1st time, I guess that cancels out at least half the hard coreness of it.

Both times I was under the legal drinking age and both times arrested for, you guessed it, drinking under age and public intoxication. As I said, I cried like a little baby the first time.

I was 16 and knew my parents were going to be royally pissed and that I was in for some very long and frequent lectures, a church sermon or two directed precisely at me and most wretchedly, weekends without my car, which where I grew up meant there was absolutely nothing to do, unless you count farm work as fun stuff.

My memories of that evening have fogged with time, but I do remember I had two girls, my girlfriend and her friend,  in my car with me when I was pulled over. In a cruel but accurate foreshadowing of my future experience with women, they both bailed on me as soon as they could find another ride home. Sorry ladies, just speaking the truth.

The second time was more of a badge of courage. I was in college and was living in my fraternity house.  Yup, I was in one and was even the President. Yes I realize not very punk of me but you need to know the details before you judge my friends, we were a bit different, I promise.

The police came and busted our party for too much fun. I drunkenly slurred they couldn’t arrest me since they were technically at my house of residence. Cops being cops, and not really caring about technical things like the law, they took that as an invitation and promptly arrested me for public intoxication.

Once again, the girl I was with bolted and went to another party while my fraternity brothers pooled their funds to get me out of jail.

Both times I was in and out in less than a couple hours and I’m pretty sure Mike Ness wasn’t talking about my puny teenage jail experiences when he wrote “Prison Bound”.

I think he was most likely referring to his own actual prison stays back in his wilder drug days.

Say what you will about prison, it sure helped Ness write some damn good songs on the “Prison Bound” CD including the self titled track “Prison Bound”, “It’s The Law” and my favorite “Like an Outlaw” a punk-western anthem that inspired this blog’s namesake.

After first discovering Social Distortion, the “Prison Bound” CD took me a while to warm up to. I had started off on “White Light, White Heat, White Trash” and worked my way backwards. Fast forward to today and it’s one of my favorite CDs of all time and the title track “Prison Bound” one of my favorite songs (even if it does conjure up bad memories of me being drunkenly or tearfully carted off in handcuffs).

At the Social Distortion concert in Wantagh, Long Island the other night it was obvious I wasn’t the only one who digs “Prison Bound”, as the crowd drunkenly sang along to every word of this sad little ditty during Social Distortion’s encore. I’m sure more than a few of them have been prison bound themselves, so maybe we all shared that common history or maybe it’s just a great song, or a little or lot of both.

Whatever the reason, I thought it would be cool to share the video of the crowd and Ness singing along together what has become a punkabilly classic “Prison Bound”.

Enjoy!
