Colombia’s I.R.A. – Punk Legends or Punk Royalty?

// June 13th, 2011 // 4 Comments » // Photos, Videos

MEDELLIN, COLOMBIA - Last Friday I received a last minute invite by my good friends Andres (Los Suziox) and Faber (Rock in Medellin Festival) to a private concert by the incredible local punk band  I.R.A.

David from I.R.A

For those of you who don’t know I.R.A., here is a little info. It is so hard to believe from looking at them but the band has been around for over 25 years, since the 1980s and the early days of Medellin’s punk scene.

Monica from I.R.A.

They’ve toured the U.S., including the legendary CBGB’s in NYC. They’ve had books written about them, been featured in several documentaries and most importantly they have put out some incredible punk music over the years and continue to do so.

Duvan from I.R.A.

But the thing I think I like most about I.R.A is their attitude. I first met them all, David (vocals/guitar), Monica (vocals/drums) and Duvan (bass/vocals) at The Casualties show in December 2009 and they gave me a short interview for Punk Outlaw (which you can see HERE).

Later that day I saw them play a kick ass set as they opened for The Casualties. Since then, I’ve seen them a few times doing things that really embody the spirit and solidarity of punk rock; like supporting their friends  Fertil Miseria to Rock Al Parque (Rock in the Park) in Bogota, creating a compilation CD to benefit a sick friend of theirs who had no place to live, etc.) and on and on.

Boom Box Licker

Not to get all sappy or emotional here but I.R.A. represents everything I love about Punk Music. They play really good, raucous and socially conscious punk music and the fact that they care passionately about the world around them is obvious in their actions on and off stage.

But watching them play a small, private show for their punk friends (it was in a small but very cool video production studio), you could tell how the punk scene in Medellin really sticks together and I.R.A. provides much of the glue. There were people from many of the local bands like Los Suziox, Nacion Criminal, Dorados Rockabilly Trio, etc., and there were many familiar faces I’ve seen at shows here over the past couple of years covering the Colombian punk scene.

As I said, I.R.A. is the glue. They help hold the scene together and after over 25 years, I think their role as punk ambassadors for a city that has seen a lot during that period of time can’t be overstated.

Watching David being carried around on the shoulders of the crowd… watching the punks joking around with Monica’s “Boom Box”, but more than that.. feeling the positive energy from the crowd which was by and large sober (it was early), very mixed (plenty of punk females) and just overall putting out nothing but good vibes.

Paisita Punk Beauty with Andres (Los Suziox)

I had just come off a rough week. Feeling a little homesick for the U.S. for the 1st time really.

I was tired of living in small, cramped hotel rooms and dealing with my horrible Spanish which seems to have not improved one single bit in my 6 months in Latin America. Dealing with issues with my other project, Raw Travel, thinking maybe I’m doing nothing but wasting time and money and why am I here? I don’t belong here, etc.

Then I go to an I.R.A. show. I see my old friends. I feel the vibes. I hear the music. I see the show. Suddenly things get back into focus. This is why I’m here. To experience this and to try to communicate this to others. Maybe a little self important, probably very myopic and selfish and definitely over dramatic and emotional, but that is the way I felt at the time.

And if I had a rough week, I imagine how many others had it even rougher. Maybe no cramped hotel, in fact no place to stay and not enough money to get through the week? My problems were nothing. This is real, this is punk, this is I.R.A.

Unfortunately I had to leave early because I had a previous commitment on the other side of town.

Coincidence or not, my taxi driver that night was the coolest, funniest dude who felt obliged to play (and sing along to) some North American metal and rock music for me. I could barely hear the guy speak over the Metalica, U-2 (the old stuff, the good stuff, not the recent garbage) and eventually, The Ramones singing “Sheenah isssss a punk rocker…”, much less understand him but I didn’t ask him to turn it down. “Mas alto por favor” (more higher please, my Tarzan Spanish way of saying “turn it up”).

All in all the rest of the evening was one of the best nights I’ve had since coming to South America. I’m not sure why, can’t pinpoint it exactly, but I think it had something to do with seeing I.R.A., who are (I think I can safely say this without critique) a legendary punk band not just from Medellin but from Colombia..from South America.. actually, a legendary punk band period.

Below is a little video clip from their show and for more photos check out the album on our flikr page HERE.

Video of Fertil Miseria @ Rock Al Parque

MEDELLIN, COLOMBIA: July 7th, 2010

Fertil Miseria

I promised you video from our coverage of Rock Al Parque in Bogota, and here goes our first clip. This clip features the very popular punk/hardcore band from Medellin, “Fertil Miseria” performing on July 4th at the big 3 day festival.

Fertil Miseria was just my 2nd interview when filming the documentary “Punktology” on location at their store, “Rock and Roll Tienda” (Rock and Roll Store) which, as the name suggests, sells punk and rock inspired clothing and merchandise.

Viky from Fertil Miseria

At that interview, there was very little English spoken (my friend Jorge from Colombian punk provided some rough translation), and my Spanish was even worse then than it is now, so I didn’t really know what to think of this wild group of friendly and outgoing characters, much less the full content of their interview.

Hardcore/Punk with a violin

Since that interview I’ve witnessed Viky (vocals) jump on stage to play with their friends, the legendary Medellin punk band I.R.A., when I.R.A.  opened for The Casualties last December and the Medellin crowd went absolutely wild. The love was palpable.

The Rock Al Parque performance was my first time witnessing the entire band playing a gig live and it was cool to watch the festival fans respond. Viky worked the crowd well and while I’m not sure what she said exactly (yes, my Spanish still pretty much sucks), I do know they went wild whenever she frequently shouted “Puta” (Whore)!

Fertil Miseria Press Conference

I won’t be able to upload the High Def video until I get back to NYC, so this flipcam video will have to do until I can edit something nice, but I hope you enjoy nonetheless.

Exclusive Interview with Jake from The Casualties

// June 2nd, 2010 // No Comments » // Videos

Here is an exclusive segment featuring our interview with Jake, lead guitarist for the NYC street punk band “The Casualties” from a couple week’s back at his tattoo parlor Jersey City Tattoos in Jersey City, NJ.

Jake has some cool stories to tell from being in a punk band on the road in places like Russia and Central and South America. Check it out and let me know what you think.

Interview with Jake from The Casualties

// May 13th, 2010 // No Comments » // Photos

During my trip to Bogota and Medellin, Colombia last December with The Casualties, I had tried to get the guys together for an “official” interview. Though I had captured lots of footage of them onstage, backstage and behind the scenes, I wanted to get their thoughts on the punk scene in Colombia, Latin America and the world but the concerts proved too hectic to get  a sit down interview with them.

Jake - Bogota, Colombia December 2009

As many places as these guys have seen in their 20 years as a band, as many punk scenes as they’ve experienced throughout the world and after observing their interactions with their fans in Colombia, I didn’t think there would be a more authentic point of view than these guys for my upcoming documentary “Punktology”.

Dan with Mercenary Management for The Casualties, and I had been exchanging voice and emails for sometime trying to find some time when both the guys and I were in our respective hometowns in the NYC area to set up an interview.  Last weekend, we finally decided I should just head across the Hudson over to Jersey City, NJ to interview Jake, (lead guitar) at his tattoo shop, the appropriately named Jersey City Tattoo Company.

Jake from The Casualties @ Jersey City Tattoo Co.

After reminiscing about Colombia, we got down to the interview and Jake, whose probably done this a few hundred times, was not shy. We touched on everything from the history and latest music of The Casualties to Jake’s own personal musical influences and thoughts on the philosophy of punk to the best punk scenes in the world.

I’ll put up a web segment here in a couple weeks so I won’t ruin it now by spilling too much information but I will say that not surprisingly, Jake says that Latin America has one of the most exciting punk scenes in the world right now and he has some great stories to tell about their last stops in Costa Rica, El Salvador & Mexico City.

They are also heading to Russia after the Warped Tour and I’m considering jumping along for that ride and expanding Punktology’s footprint to other parts of the world.

Jake was as cool as ever and I left the tattoo shop thinking I had just interviewed a truly talented and  authentic punk artist who really believes in the ideals of punk music.

The only thing I like better than the Casualties music is the guys in the band themselves.

I think they really do a great job of striking that balance between a big time punk band and regular dudes you can drink a beer with after the show, whether that show be in front of thousand of people at the Warped Tour or a few hundred in Latin America.

Stay tuned for the web segment coming up soon.

Casualties T-Shirt Featured on CBS News’ Story on Kent State Massacre

// May 2nd, 2010 // No Comments » // Videos

I happened to be watching CBS News this weekend and the story on the 40th anniversary of the Kent State massacre which has always intrigued me. It’s wild to think that the U.S. military would fire on their own citizens killing and wounding them. Sounds like a third world military dictatorship doesn’t it? But alas it did happen.

One of the students wounded during the confrontation, Alan Canfora is wearing a Casualties T-Shirt. You get a good shot of it towards the end of the video. The shootings (some call it murder, I tend to agree) are still a mystery.

Check it out.

Hardcore Casualties Fans in Bogota, Colombia

With legendary punks “The Casualties” celebrating their 20th anniversary in a few days, I thought I’d repost this video of their Bogota, Colombia show just a few months ago, in case you missed it. I hope to be able to post some video and photos from their big 20th celebration featuring “The Unseen” later this week.

I also have a Colombia trip pending in April, so more to come from that punk stronghold as well.

Until then.. enjoy:

Exclusive Backstage Interview with Punk Band I.R.A. in Medellin

// January 30th, 2010 // 2 Comments » // Videos

If you’ve been following my travels or this blog, you are aware that I was in Bogota and Medellin, Colombia last December for the big Casualties show there. It was a memorable event and a heck of a lot warmer than NYC right now so I sure wish I was back there.

One of the highlights of the trip was meeting Medellin’s legendary punk band I.R.A. backstage just before they went on to open for The Casualties. If you don’t know these guys, they’ve been around for a long, long time and have toured the U.S., including a stop at NYC’s infamous CBGBs back in the day. They’ve even authored a book on the punk scene in Colombia and graciously gave me a copy, which is serving as a nice incentive for me to get fluent in Spanish more quickly so I can read it.

In true punk fashion, the guys were cool as hell and graciously agreed to let me interview them for the documentary. With my bad Spanish and their so-so English we were able to struggle through an interview that shed a little light on what the punk scene was and is like in Colombia and South America. If you look closely you’ll see some of the guys from The Casualties in the background chilling before the show.

Check it out and please let me know what you think.
